about
A very true story about moving to Chicago in December 2006 with very little furniture and even fewer friends. :) I wrote this song a year later, as an entry for Sufjan Stevens' one-off Great Xmas Song Xchange contest. I didn't win, but I always liked this song anyway. It has been through several incarnations, but this is my favorite one. <3
lyrics
Last Christmas, I'd just moved into town
And I didn't know anyone, so I spent the day alone
in my empty apartment
But things are so different this year!
I've still got no one, but now there are things here.
I've got a couch now! I've got two cats now!
(Well, actually, I had them then, but I thought that I would mention it.)
I've got a table where you can sit if you'd come over this Christmas day
I'll make us a turkey, I'll even try my mother's recipes
Some southern cornbread stuffing might be nice to make our bellies full
We would be happy singing songs around the Christmas tree
Sing the lead, I'll take the harmony this Christmas day
(Fa la la la la la la!)
This Christmas, I've been here just a year
And I still don't know anyone, so I'll spend the day alone
I've got cable TV, we could watch a movie
If you'd come over this Christmas day
If you'd come over this Christmas day
Please come over this Christmas day!
